As the days grow shorter and the evenings start to carry that crisp autumn air, there’s nothing more comforting than curling up with a good book in a space that feels warm, welcoming, and utterly cosy. A Scandinavian-inspired reading nook is the perfect little retreat for this time of year — it combines the simplicity and functionality of Scandi design with the sense of comfort and calm that we crave in autumn.
If you’ve been dreaming of creating your own reading corner, or you already have one that you’d like to refresh for the season, this guide is full of styling ideas, tips, and inspiration to make your Scandi nook feel snug, inviting, and perfectly autumnal.
1. Start with a Comfortable Base
Every great nook begins with somewhere inviting to sit. In true Scandinavian style, think simple, functional furniture with clean lines and natural materials.
-
Armchairs: A low, slightly reclined armchair in oak, ash, or beech paired with soft upholstery is ideal. Look to brands like Muuto, IKEA, or HAY for timeless options.
-
Daybeds or benches: If you’re short on space, a wooden bench layered with cushions and throws can double as a cosy reading perch.
-
Window seats: If you’re lucky enough to have a bay window or a wide sill, transform it with a padded cushion and layered textiles.

We love this womb style chair chair in a dark and moody grey that’s lifted with the tan cushion. To shop an original womb chair see knolls womb chair and ottoman here or for a more budget friendly alternative shop Irish based CA Design’s womb style chair in a neutral wheat tone here.
2. Layer Up with Textures
Autumn is all about texture. In Scandinavian interiors, texture replaces colour as the main way to add depth and warmth. This is especially important for a nook, which should feel cocoon-like.
-
Throws: Choose chunky knits, wool, or faux sheepskin throws in neutral shades like oatmeal, grey, or warm beige.
-
Cushions: Mix linen cushions with wool or bouclé for contrast. Don’t be afraid of oversized cushions for that sink-in feeling.
-
Rugs: A small jute or wool rug underfoot will instantly make your nook feel defined and grounded. Layering a sheepskin over a flatweave rug is a Scandi classic.

We love this neutral toned reading nook for all the cosy vibes. Some of our favourite Irish shops to sources beautiful throws in luxury fibres such as cashmere, alpaca and wool blends is . 3. Warm Up the Lighting
Lighting is one of the most important elements in Scandinavian interiors, and even more so in autumn when natural daylight fades earlier. The goal: a soft, layered glow that invites you to linger with your book.
-
Floor lamps: A slim, minimalist floor lamp with a fabric shade creates a warm pool of light.
-
Table lamps: Place a small lamp on a side table — ceramic or wooden bases keep with Scandi simplicity.
-
Candles: A cluster of tea lights or pillar candles instantly adds atmosphere. Consider lantern-style candleholders in glass or matte black metal for Nordic charm.
-
String lights: Draped casually around a window or bookshelf, they add a gentle twinkle without overwhelming the simplicity of the space.

We could lose hours in this cosy reading nook by the window with a sheepskin cushion and minimalist white standing lamp. For a huge selection of standing lamps try lampmasters who deliver throughout Ireland and Europe.
4. Add Autumnal Accents (the Scandi Way)
Scandinavian design isn’t about clutter or excess, but you can still bring in subtle seasonal touches that nod to autumn.
-
Natural elements: Think bowls of pinecones, sprigs of eucalyptus, dried grasses, or small pumpkins in muted tones (white, pale green, soft orange).
-
Earthy tones: While the base palette should stay neutral, accents in rust, terracotta, or deep forest green can bring warmth.
-
Scents: Autumnal candles — think fig, sandalwood, or cedar — tie the sensory experience together.
Real home example: Style a wooden tray with a candle, a ceramic mug of tea, and a small vase of dried grasses. Take a lifestyle shot in your own home to make it authentic.
5. Keep It Minimal but Personal
The beauty of Scandi design lies in its balance: pared-back but never sterile. Your nook should feel personal and lived-in, while still uncluttered.
-
Books: Stack a small pile of your current reads on a side table.
-
Art prints: A minimalist line drawing or nature-inspired print can hang above your nook.
-
Mementoes: A single photo in a simple frame, or a handmade ceramic bowl, adds warmth without visual noise.
Remember, it’s about quality over quantity. A few carefully chosen pieces will have more impact than a dozen scattered trinkets.

6. Define the Space
If your nook is part of a larger room — like a corner of the living room or bedroom — use styling to define the zone and make it feel intentional.
-
Rugs anchor the seating area.
-
Bookshelves or ladder shelves behind your chair create a cocoon effect.
-
Screens or plants can create a sense of separation in open-plan spaces.
Tip: Even in a small apartment, placing a chair beside a floor lamp and rug instantly creates a “zone” without needing walls.
7. Embrace Hygge Rituals
Scandi interiors aren’t just about how a space looks, but how it feels. Autumn is the season of hygge — that sense of cosiness and contentment. Bring rituals into your nook:
-
Always have a blanket within arm’s reach.
-
Keep a favourite mug for tea or hot chocolate nearby.
-
Create a small ritual of lighting candles before you sit down to read.
This is where design and lifestyle meet — your nook becomes more than a corner, it’s an experience you look forward to every evening.
8. Where to Source Scandi Nook Essentials
Here are some great places to find pieces for your autumn reading nook (and potential affiliate opportunities):
-
Affordable basics: IKEA, Jysk, H&M Home, Søstrene Grene.
-
Mid-range design: The White Company (for throws, candles), Ferm Living, BoConcept.
-
Investment pieces: Muuto, &Tradition, Carl Hansen.
-
Textiles: Etsy for handmade linen cushions and wool throws.

9. My Own Little Scandi Reading Nook
Finally a little look at my own reading nook at home and how I’ve added cosy elements for Autumn. The chair is a tan leather easy chair from Harvey Norman called Wendy and is a super comfortable option that looks as good as the day we bought it, over five years ago, it has just softened and mellowed over time. The throw is an alpaca through from Irish brand Mc Nutt in a monchrome stripe and is a super-soft by lightweight blanket to curl up in for reading evenings. The much loved ambient lighting is the Toad table table lamp all the way from Finland from a lighting company Himmee… I have to say it makes me smiled every time I turn it on ! And the cosy sheekskin is over five years old and is a shorn sheepskin from The White Company… to make this space a perfect reading nest.

Final Thoughts
A Scandinavian reading nook isn’t about filling a corner with stuff — it’s about creating a small, intentional space that feels calm, cosy, and deeply personal. With a comfortable base, layered textures, warm lighting, and a few autumnal accents, you can turn even the smallest corner into your favourite retreat.
This autumn, let your nook be a place where you pause, slow down, and savour the simple pleasures — a good book, a hot drink, and the gentle glow of candlelight.
Because at the heart of Scandinavian living is this: finding joy in simplicity, and comfort in the everyday.
